6 Signs Your Dentures Need to Be Replaced

Holding denturesHow long can you expect your false teeth to last? Traditional dentures usually last about 7 to 10 years, depending on how well you take care of them; after that point, you’ll likely need to get a replacement – or maybe even an upgrade. Here are 6 signs that it might be time get rid of your old restorations and replace them with implant retained dentures in Bellingham.

1. Dentures are Loose or Keep Falling Out

Normally your dentures should stay in place while you chew and speak thanks to the tight fit it has with the gum. However, if they keep coming loose, or if they slip or fall out of the mouth, there’s a good chance they need to be adjusted or replaced. Even if a denture fits properly at first, over time bone loss will cause the shape of your jaw to change, which can easily change the fit of your false teeth.

2. It Hurts to Chew

If your dentures don’t fit properly, you might notice some pain when you bite down or chew on something. In some cases, this kind of discomfort could also be related to gum disease or another serious oral health problem, so talk to your dentist as soon as possible to figure out the true underlying cause.

3. There are Sores on Your Gums

Loose dentures will rub on your gums whenever you move your mouth, even if you’re not aware that it’s happening. While sores are common if your dentures are new, once your mouth adjusts to them you normally shouldn’t be seeing any sore spots unless there’s a problem.

4. Difficulty Speaking Clearly

You might develop a speech impediment if your dentures don’t fit properly. You might find that you suddenly have a lisp or slur certain words. Again, some difficulty speaking is natural when you first get dentures, but it’s a sign that there’s something wrong if the problem resurfaces or doesn’t go away over time.

5. Discolored Dentures

You can avoid discoloration of your dentures for a long time with proper care, but eventually – especially if you drink a lot of coffee or tea – your false teeth will become yellowed or otherwise stained. Teeth whitening is not an option in this situation; a replacement is the only real choice.

6. Physical Damage

Are there any cracks or chips in your dentures? Have some of the teeth loosened? Some damage can be repaired, but in other cases you’ll simply need to get new dentures.

If it is time to trade in your false teeth, it could be a good chance to upgrade them with dental implants in Bellingham. This way, you won’t have to worry about your dentures coming loose, and they’ll last much longer than they would have otherwise. Take a look at your smile in the mirror and see whether it’s time to get a new one!
