5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

For many, New Year’s eve symbolizes endings and new beginnings. They look back at everything that accomplished in the past year, what they hope to accomplish in the new one, and how they want to feel by the end of the next 365-day cycle. Though New Year’s resolutions are a great way to motivate yourself to eat better or to exercise, they can also help you improve your oral health. Read on for five ideas for resolutions that will help you achieve the healthy smile you desire!

#1: Brush and Floss Better

Healthy smiles start at home. That’s why it’s important for you to make sure you’re practicing good oral hygiene. This will allow you to save money on restorative treatments by preventing the issues from occurring in the first place. Brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid scratching the enamel. Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth against decay. Additionally, floss between your pearly whites at least once per day, preferably before bed, to remove bacteria and food particles.

#2: Visit the Dentist

If you aren’t already, make sure to visit your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings. This will allow them to remove buildups of tartar from your teeth to lessen your chances of decay. They will also do a thorough examination to ensure that your oral health is in good shape. If it isn’t, they’ll work with you to come up with a treatment plan to get your smile back on track.

#3: Brighten Your Smile

Who doesn’t love a good cola every once in a while? Your teeth certainly don’t! dark sodas, coffee, tea, red wine, and other highly pigmented foods and beverages can stain your pearly whites. Cut back on our consumption and speak with your dentist about the options they have to cover up discoloration or whiten your smile.

#4: Conquer Dry Mouth

Cavities and increased plaque levels are just a few of the things you have to worry about as a result of dry mouth. Make sure to drink plenty of water to prevent these issues. Additionally, speak with your dentist so they can determine if there’s an underlying cause that needs to be treated.

#5: Cut Out Tobacco

Tobacco can lead to an array or oral health issues, including dental discoloration, gum disease, and even oral cancer. Make a point of cutting this habit out in the new year. Ask your dentist or doctor for resources if you need help quitting.

If you haven’t come up with a New Year’s resolution yet, there’s still time! Consider making one that will let you eat next year with excellent oral hygiene and a healthy smile. Your pearly whites will thank you for it!
