Why You Should Still Attend Dental Checkups Even If You Have a Full Denture

If you wear full dentures, going to the dentist may no longer seem like a big deal. After all, if you no longer have any natural teeth, there’s not a whole lot the dentist can do for you, right? Well, actually, that’s not correct. The truth is that even if you have no remaining “real” teeth, visiting your dentist every six months is still extremely important. Here are four reasons why you should continue to see your dentist regularly, even if you wear full dentures.

Protecting Your Oral Health

Even if you have few or no natural teeth, your oral health is still very important. In fact, you can still get gum disease even if you don’t have any teeth left. Thus, you should still visit your dentist every six months for your regular, biannual check-ups. These appointments give your dentist the opportunity to examine any remaining teeth, your gums, your jawbones, and to screen your mouth for serious conditions like oral cancer.

Repairing Your Dentures

Even the most well-careful eaters can still damage their dentures accidentally. Over time, the teeth can become loose or chipped, and the base can become warped or cracked. They can even stop fitting securely, requiring a reline to correct. When you visit your dentist regularly, bring your dentures along for the exam. At this appointment, he can make sure they are in good condition and repair any issues before they get worse or recommend a new pair if they have become irreparably damaged.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Another wonderful benefit of seeing your dentist with dentures is a denture-deep cleaning. While you certainly do your best to care for them on your own, your dentist has special tools to help keep them looking (and smelling) great!

Providing New Opportunities

If you’re unhappy with your dentures, your biannual exam and cleaning appointments are an excellent opportunity to discuss your tooth replacement options with your dentist. Dental implants are a more durable, long-lasting solution for missing teeth, and are much easier to care for than dentures. Your dentist can let you know if you’d be a good candidate for this treatment and discuss the pros and cons of this type of restoration.

Remember, just because you wear full dentures doesn’t mean you don’t need to see your dentist regularly. Your dentist can help you extend the life of your dentures, so they look and feel great for as long as possible!
