The Right Tool for The Job: Which Type of Denture Adhesive Should I Get?

When it to ensuring your dentures sit firmly and comfortably in your mouth, you really do need the right tool for the job! Denture adhesives were designed with these two goals in mind, but there are a lot to choose from. How do you know which type you should get?

Ultimately, the best denture adhesive is going to be the one that most closely matches your preferences. Keep reading to learn more about each type so you can make an informed decision.

Comfortable Creams

As the name implies, adhesive creams are kind of like hand lotions in texture. Patients generally find this type is easy to apply and readjust if necessary. Since they create a comfortable cushion between your dentures and gums, adhesive creams can also help reduce irritation.

You should know that creams can be a bit messy! The adhesive might come out of the tube faster than you expect, and tends to squeeze out from underneath your dentures as you put them on.

Powerful Powders

Powder adhesives don’t last as long as other types, but can be used and cleaned up quickly. If you’d like something you can literally sprinkle on until you get used to your prosthetic, powder adhesives are an excellent, minimalistic option. You’ll simply lightly dust the adhesive over the underside of your denture, press the base to your gums, and voila – no more slippage!

Sticky Strips

What if you want the long-lasting strength of a cream adhesive mixed with the convenience of a powder adhesive? Does such a product exist?

Adhesive strips could be exactly what you’re looking for. They’re pre-cut into even slices, meaning all you have to do is stick them onto your dentures. You can even get pads for them if you need an anti-irritation cushion. The only thing you’ll have to keep in mind is that if adhesive strips don’t fit your custom prosthetic, you’ll have to make adjustments before using them.

Choosing the Best Tool for You

Maybe you can already tell which type of denture adhesive you’d prefer, or maybe it will take some experimenting. Either way, don’t hesitate to swap out your products if it’s just not working for you! Denture adhesive should help you feel more comfortable and secure with your prosthetic, so if a specific type isn’t doing that, it’s time to move on to the next one.
